Waiting for Joomla! 1.6

Joomla 1.6Ron Severdia explains in Joomla Projecting the good reasons for delays with Joomla! version 1.6 and promises a second Alpha release soon. I say: "no worries, please take as much time as you need". Why? The transition from Joomla! 1.0 to 1.5 goes on still...

Initially we (Comduit Websites) wouldn't do new sites in 1.5 because the extensions required were not available. It's going to be the same for 1.6 and is certain to delay adoption. Since (in my opinion) the availability of 1.5 extensions have only started to reach maturity during this year (and some still remain off the mark), I'm pretty sure many extension developers are not jumping up and down with excitement to convert and support another concurrent version.

Joomla! 1.0 was really bad in certain respects (and yes, I knew that when I took on Mambo in the first place - I was playing the 80/20 rule with a 'long' position). Consequently, we did some really bad things to squeeze out what clients and designers wanted: we changed code! It's a great lesson I hope not to repeat. For that and other reasons what remains is a bunch of 1.0 sites that are not easily upgraded. Ironically, pressure mounts to upgrade some of these because extensions required to meet new requirements are only available in 1.5. I'm sure the conversion of sites from 1.5 to 1.6 will be easier but do feel strong resistance.

The current version Joomla! 1.5 works well. I find it a pleasure to work with. Any requirement for something looking like ACL or nested categories has been met without compromising the core system. While I'm sure there are some wonderful improvements in 1.6 I'm not hankering after them (yet).

So, no rush good people. I'd rather 1.6 suitably raises the bar with all those great ideas to ensure that 1.7 is a long, long way off and gives the enduring extension developers enough time to become 1.6 compatible.

What are you looking forward to in 1.6 and what are your thoughts on migration? I would love to read your comments.
