February Living Tantra 2010

Sensing existanceA wonderful group met for the inauguration of Living Tantra. Half the group knew nothing of Tantra and were satisfying their nervous yet beautiful curiosity to learn more of what it could mean for them in their lives. It was a privilege to share with everyone this introductory experience.

Even if you are unable to join the group you are able to participate and share comments of your experiences here. February's exercise relates to a starting point in working with Tantra: being willing and able to love yourself. This exercise brings awareness to ourselves as sensory beings and our capacity to enjoy the pleasure of our senses:

Arranging yourself in a way that feels comfortable, close your eyes and bring attention to your heart by placing your hands onto your chest, breathing gently and deeply into the space of your heart. Relax into it with a feeling of love, care and holding, allowing a feeling of love to flow down your arms into your hands and fingers so they become extensions of that love.

Now, with this quality and a sense of playful curiosity, explore your entire body with your hands. Experiment with moving your body and limbs, using different textures of touch, changing the speed of caress, and notice what you feel as you navigate the different curves, extensions and hollows of yourself. Give yourself permission to enjoy it, to take as much time as you like and to have no objective other than exploration. Breath constantly and deeply.

Notice more than the sensation of your hands: the feeling of fabric and air on your skin, temperature changes, different smells and tastes that occur in your mouth. Notice also any feelings that rise up, any resistances or tensions held in the body and any other sensations you experience - notice these without judgement or trying to change them, but with a sense of allowing.

This exercise is a gift of honouring to yourself. Over the coming month find opportunities to explore your senses. It need not be confined to being alone or at home. Walking down the street you can notice how your body feels moving under the fabric of your clothing or the scents and sounds that carry over the air across your skin.

Living Tantra is a regular group, meeting on the first Thursday evening of each month. It is for anyone interested in an ongoing practice of Tantra, bringing fullness of awareness into their daily lives. The group provides support, sharing and practice of basic Tantra exercises. It is suitable for anyone wanting an introduction to Tantra as well as for those who already have experience with the practice of Tantra.
