March Living Tantra 2010

In March's Living Tantra I was joined by Shakti and we combined the evening with a workshop on sexual energy. The conceptual different between a typical genital orgasm which expels energy, and the raising of sexual energy so that it flows throughout and enlivens the body, was discussed. In What is a Tantric Orgasm?, Shakti provide more information on this.

The second half was more practical using techniques of breath to build a flow of energy. This is one of the exercises we did which helps to activate our sexual energy source, or base chakra, and raise this up to the heart chakra:

Sit, lie or stand so that you are comfortable, your breathing is unobstructed and close your eyes. Allow your breathing to slow and deepen, breathing into your belly through an open mouth. When you exhale, just release the breath as you do when you sigh deeply. This has a feeling of 'letting go' and relaxes the body. Get into a rhythm with this and allow any sounds that happen in either the in or the out breath. You want a feeling of being unrestricted.

Now, bring your attention to your pubococcygeus or PC muscle (this is the muscle used to stop the flow of urine). When you breath in, hold this muscle at about 60 - 80% effort. Keep holding it for the duration of the inhale and then release it during the exhale. Have patients and remember, when holding the PC muscle, to be breathing deeply and slowly into the belly. You will begin to feel a stirring in your groin even though you do not necessarily feel aroused. Do this a few times so that you are comfortable with the exercise.

As you become used to this combination of breathing, contracting the PC muscles and then letting everything go with the exhale, draw the energy that's building up towards the heart. It helps initially to use your hands to indicate the flow. Start with the inhale with your hands down at the level of your genitals and then as you breath in, holding the PC muscles, raise your hands slowly up to the level of the heart. As you let go of everything your hands return to the genitals.

Eventually you can stop using the hands and this feeling of energy rising up your body will happen naturally. As with sounds that arise, allow your body some flexibility to move as it wants to. You'll find it responds in a sensual and flowing way.

This exercise can bring a certain yummy, aliveness into the body. While the beginning of an energy flow will occur, most of us are energetically blocked by unexpressed emotions held as constrictions in the body. Shakti and I completed the workshop by demonstrating on two of the participants how we work with this in a session. We were able to show how old emotion can quickly be accessed and released, taking a person from numbness to relaxation to extreme emotional releasing and then finishing in a light state of unburdened elation.

Living Tantra is a regular group, meeting on the first Thursday evening of each month. It is for anyone interested in an ongoing practice of Tantra, bringing fullness of awareness into their daily lives. The group provides support, sharing and practice of basic Tantra exercises. It is suitable for anyone wanting an introduction to Tantra as well as for those who already have experience with the practice of Tantra.
