Twittering mad
This site and Joomla!

I've been experimenting with Twitter, as some have noticed, and in general preparing this site for the social media virtual-scape. The various tests have been run and most is in place...

To start, using Twitter as an example, there seem to be four aspect to getting a website tuned into the bird-song:

  1. Your tweets on your website.

  2. Automated tweets about new posts on your website with a link back to the post.

  3. Social bookmarking links to allow visitors to tweet a page from website.

  4. Links back to your Twitter profile so visitors can 'follow you'. (still to do on this site)

All four apply to any social media space. For example, you can combine posts and updates from Twitter, Facebook, Delicious and Flickr into something called a 'lifestream'(?!?). The trick, I guess, is to do this simply without continuous effort (other than what you put into creating posts) and clutter.

One additional aspect to consider (with respect specifically to 'broadcast' social media) is an RSS feed and it's submission to blog aggregators such as South Africa's Amatomu.

For those interested in the technical implementation on this website in Joomla!, I've used the following extensions for each of the points above and limited to Twitter:

  1. Tweets Module from Van Eldijk Studio's

  2. Twitter Status from Tomasz Dobrzyński 2009-06-07 I've disabled this as I prefer to do it manually for now

  3. JBookmarks

  4. (still to do on this site)

  5. (RSS feeds) I've used the standard Joomla! functionality for this.
